Trail 1 - Historical Architecture - Duration approximately 40 minutes. Reflecting England’s growing wealth: Medieval, Georgian and Victorian buildings in the old town centre.
Trail 2 - Castle Mound - Duration approximately 50 minutes. Growing travel and commerce: The Norman castle mound, coaching inns, maltings and Stort navigation. For this route visit the Tourist Information Centre and ask for the key to the castle mound.
Trail 3 - Shopping and Entertainment - Duration approximately 60 minutes. Shopping and entertainment: How the 20th Century has replaced Victorian and earlier expansion away from the old town centre.
Trail 4 - The River Stort - Duration approximately 55 minutes. The river Stort navigation, first opened in 1769, brought considerable prosperity to Bishop’s Stortford; barges traded for brewers in London, returning with timber and coal.
