Paddling Pool update

Bishop’s Stortford Town Council are pleased to advise that the construction of the Paddling Pool is now complete. We have received a lot of positive feedback from large numbers of people who have used it however have been experiencing a few teething problems.  Until these are resolved the pool be open intermittently. We are working with the contractors to minimise the downtime however it will inevitably be closed periodically during the early part of June.

Having listened to comments, we will also be improving the nonslip properties of the outer path. You may wish to consider wearing footwear until the improvements have been made.

Once the issues have been resolved you will be able to enjoy the paddling pool during the summer months from 9am - 7pm. The public toilet will be open between 9am and 5pm.  From 7pm - 10pm the illuminated centre feature will be operational.

Stop Press - latest news

We believe we have now resolved the principal cause of intermittant operation and the pool has now operated faultlessly for several successive days.  It is hoped that it will be open .during the weekend of 6th/7th June.

The pool will, however, be closed Jun 8th-12th in order that we can apply an additional anti-slip coating to the terracotta surround.  This was requested by many users.  We will also be undertaking some further work on the facility itself to reduce the probability of future failure.  We apologise for any inconvenience.

Neighbourhood Plan update - a date for your diary

Would you like to have a say on the future of Bishop's Stortford? The Neighbourhood Plan team is holding an Open Day and Exhibition in the main auditorium at Rhodes on Saturday 27th June 2015 between 9.30am and 4.00pm. There will be an opportunity to meet the team and discuss aspects of the Neighbourhood Plan for All Saints, Central, South and part of Thorley Parish. The plan is still being developed and the team needs feedback from residents and businesses in Bishop's Stortford on its initial objectives and draft policies. Everyone is welcome! For further information on our Neighbourhood Plan visit www.stortfordplan.org

Want to run a cafe?

An opportunity has arisen to run the 'pop-up' cafe on Sworder's Field during this coming summer.  The pop-up cafe on Sworder's Field was very successful last year, however the person who won the tender to run it this year cannot now do so for personal reasons.  The pitch is therefore available.  If you are interested please email james.parker@bishopsstortfordtc.gov.uk for details or call us on 01279 712147.  You will need to provide your own van or tent with the necessary facilities, have a food hygiene certificate and public liability insurance.  A fee is charged for the pitch.

This is a great opportunity for someone with an entrepreneurial spirit to run a business during the summer months.

Paddling Pool CCTV Survey - Results

Following the vandalism of the new paddling pool we held an online survey asking whether we should install CCTV.  We received 233 responses and the overwhelming majoriy of respondents felt we should.

The results were as follows:

Do you use, or plan to use, the paddling pool in Bishop's Stortford:  Yes 90%, No 10%

Do you support the installation of CCTV at the paddling pool in Bishop's Stortford, in an effort to combat vandalism: Yes 91%, No 7%

Of those who said they use or plan to use the paddling pool, the proportion in favour of CCTV was actually slightly higher with 93% of those who use or plan to use the paddling pool being in favour.

We received a total of 92 free-form comments which we are in the process of analysing.  Thank you to everyone who responded.

Paddling pool vandalised - should we install CCTV?

The new paddling pool, due to open on 8th May (VE Day) was vandalised on 15th April and, sadly, we are now considering installing CCTV.  If we do, images will be viewed only when an incident occurs.  We want your views - is CCTV at the pool an invasion of privacy or a necessary evil.  If you use the pool please complete our survey

Temporary closure of Basbow Lane - access to car park

East Herts Council has announced that there will be a temporary closure of Basbow Lane in Bishop's Stortford for house builders who are bringing in a crane. Annual Town Meeting

Members of the public are invited to join their Town Councillors at Rhodes on Tuesday 31 March 2015, at 7.30pm for the Annual Town Meeting.  Tea and coffee will be served at 7pm.

Why Attend?

The Annual Town Meeting  has proved to be a valuable forum for Bishop's Stortford taxpayers to voice their opinions, question their elected Councillors and directly effect change in the community. Here, in this assembly, you can make your voice heard and learn about town issues, some of which may even be new to you!

What's On?

The Town Council has many projects in progress, such as the refurbishment of the paddling pool, the Masterplan for Sworders Field, the newly acquired running of the Markets, a Neighbourhood Plan for the Silver Leys and Meads Wards (which is due to go to referendum on 19 March 2015), and a new Neighbourhood Plan for the South, Central and All Saints Wards and part of Thorley parish.

These projects are in addition to the Town Council's regular activities, such as the maintenace of the cemeteries and allotments, the running of the community mini buses, including the Stortford Shuttle, on behalf of the Mini Bus Trust, and the management of four community centres, on behalf of the Community Centre Trusts. The TIC continues to provide residents and visitors alike with information on the Town and its activities and what's on in the surrounding area.

So why not spend an hour with us to up-date yourself on all these exciting and important projects, in addition to gaining an insight into the work undertaken throughout the year by the individual Town Council Committees.

The Agenda and further information will be posted on the Town Council's Website and notice boards around the Town two weeks before the meeting.

Questions in advance must be submitted no later than Friday 27 March 2015. Questions may be accepted on the evening if time allows.
