  • On The Beat: Stories from 1914-1918

    This special exhibition showcases work by students and ex-students from Middlesex University’s illustration department, who will use the medium of graphic novels to bring the stories of the home front to life. Research into local police records of the period has uncovered some fascinating, humorous and challenging stories illustrating life at home for ordinary people and the police, as well as soldiers back from the trenches.

    Bishops Stortford's new professional company Contexture Theatre return to the Rhodes with R C Sherriff's ground breaking play ‘Journey’s End’.  Painting an unflinching view of life in the trenches towards the end of the First World War and set just before the battle of Saint-Quentin, the play focuses on the experiences of the officers of a British infantry company on the front line.  Each man has his own way of coping with the strains of trench warfare.  A Captain at 21, Stanhope drinks heavily; a previous schoolmaster, Osborne (Uncle) reads Alice in Wonderland; Trotter just eats; Hibbert claims to have Neuralgia; and Mason makes tea that tastes of onions! Into this mix comes Raleigh, a fresh faced 18 year old straight out of school. How will he cope?

    Museum Photowalk: Sunday 26th October:  2-3.30pm
    A 1.5 hour photo walk run by Sarah Stephens Photography and Bishops Stortford Museum.
    Learn about the history of some of the interesting buildings in Bishop’s Stortford and how to photograph buildings and street scenes using the different settings on your camera!
    There will be some walking but none will be strenuous. Suitable outdoor clothes will be essential as there will some standing around whilst photographing.
    This is suitable for any type of digital camera and any level of photographic experience.
    Cost £25 per person including all materials and tuition. Booking essential as there will be limited spaces to enable individual tuition.

    The brainchild of Artistic Director Phil Dale, initially to fill a last minute gap in a half-term holiday, Play in a Day has established itself as one of the most popular events for young children in the Rhodes calendar. Phoenix Theatre School in association with Rhodes are looking for primary aged children to join us for the challenge of creating a fun new piece of theatre in just one day! We’ll kick off at 10am and then family and friends will be asked to join us at 7.00pm to see the play we have created. A great opportunity for kids to make new friends and have fun in a safe environment whilst parents get a well deserved break!
