  • On The Beat: Stories from 1914-1918

    Tuesday, August 5, 2014 - 1:00am to Friday, May 15, 2020 - 1:00am

This special exhibition showcases work by students and ex-students from Middlesex University’s illustration department, who will use the medium of graphic novels to bring the stories of the home front to life. Research into local police records of the period has uncovered some fascinating, humorous and challenging stories illustrating life at home for ordinary people and the police, as well as soldiers back from the trenches.
Special school visits are available by appointment – please contact the museum: museum@rhodesbishopsstortford.org.uk or by phone on 01279 651746

Copies of the accompanying Graphic Novel : ‘On the Beat during the Great War’ are available for sale from Rhodes.

  • Stones In His Pockets

    Tuesday, April 21, 2015 - 1:00am to Sunday, April 26, 2015 - 1:00am

Contexture present their second play of the season with this hilarious and moving tale of a quiet Irish community turned upside down by the arrival of a Hollywood movie shoot.
Seen by over 2 million people and universally loved by all that see it, this play is brought to life by two highly talented actors who play 15 characters between them. Although the play centres on two down on their luck Irish lads, the comedy is mainly found in the offbeat and outlandish characters they dexterously step in and out of: Caroline Giovanni, the glamorous movie star who has an eye for the ‘natives’; Old Mickey, the only surviving extra from “The Quiet Man” who almost dies of an heart attack at the thought of attending a funeral where no alcohol will be available; two cheeky lads intent on stardom; Simon the First Assistant Director whose authority is always being undermined, although unintentionally, by Aisling, his flirtatious Production Assistant. And as for the community, milking the cows is a higher priority than starring in some fancy film!
Treat yourself to a great night out - you won’t want to miss it this time around!

'Mr. Turner' examines the last 25 years of the great if eccentric landscape painter J.M.W. Turner (Timothy Spall), one of the most important figures in British art history.
A popular and anarchic member of the Royal Academy of Arts, Turner visited brothels, stayed with the country aristocracy, and had himself strapped to the mast of a ship so he could paint a snowstorm. He died in Chelsea, having lived there incognito for some time with a seaside landlady.
Timothy Spall won the Best Actor award at Cannes 2014 for his performance as 'Mr. Turner.'
