For the past three centuries, fashion has been affected by politics, social change and popular culture. Both men and women have used what they wear to indicate their status, comply with social expectations, attract or please a partner, or send a message about their own individuality.

Completing the Look: 300 Years of Fashion Accessories will examine how accessories fit into this. Featuring beautiful accessories dating from as early as 1720 up to the end of the 1970s, the exhibition will explore the reasons behind changes in fashion and what we can discover about the lives of people through what they chose to wear.

See Georgian heelless dancing shoes, Victorian bonnets, Edwardian fans,1920s beaded bags, 1950s fur stoles and 1960s headscarves. Discover the secret language of fans, the reaction to the very first top hat and the impact teenagers had on 20th century fashion.

Paperwork by Jane Stobart - an exhibition of drawings and original prints inspired by unusual industrial locations:

“My prints are inspired by the subject of people at work. I have spent many years drawing in some truly amazing places such as a bell foundry, construction sites, a tube train maintenance depot, historic sewage pumping stations, etc. The drawings I make are the starting point for all of my ideas and images and I work with the processes of etching and woodcut. I am attracted to locations with strong, dramatic light and dark, and find that the rich tonal range that etching can offer, evokes industrial drama like no other printmaking process.”

Jane Stobart won the Best in Show at the Harlow Open 2016 for the piece ‘Selecting the Bell Case’, aquatint, 2015, and has had a long connection with Harlow. Originally from South Shields Jane has lived in Harlow for 20 years and creates her prints from a studio at her home. In 2012 Jane had a commission for a permanent work for the atrium of the University Centre Harlow, entitled ‘Building Blocks’ made from wooden panels. Jane also formally taught at Harlow College for the Art Foundation course as well as colleges and universities in London.

Prints and drawings of Jane’s are held in the permanent collections of several museums nationally and internationally, including The British Museum (2014&15), Smithsonian Institute in Washington DC, Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge, the Ashmolean Museum and the Museum of London. Jane is also a fellow of the Royal Society of Painters -Printmakers and has exhibited nationally and internationally including exhibitions in Kenya, Russia, Australia, Tawain and the USA.

Another aspect of Jane’s vocation is writing and she regularly contributes to the journal ‘Printmaking Today’. She has three published books each relating to different aspects of her practice as an artist; ‘Extraordinary Sketchbooks’ A&C Black, London, 2011, ‘Printmaking for Beginners’  A&C Black, London,2004, ‘Drawing Matters’  A&C Black, London 2005.

    William Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream

And as anyone who has ever been to one knows, festivals tend to bring out the strangest behaviour and things are about to get very weird indeed….
