Following an initiative by Bishop's Stortford Town Council the toilets at the Causeway will re-open during the summer months. At the Town Council meeting on Monday 28th June it was agreed to support a solution hatched jointly with East Herts Council.
Concerns were expressed by some parents after the Causeway public toilet was closed earlier this year. However an innovative solution will see the two councils share the costs of opening the conveniences when demand will be greatest. East Herts Council will see to the insurance, rates and maintenance of the fabric of the building, as well as providing the Town Council with a grant towards the cost of running the facility. The Town Council will see to the day-to-day repairs, opening and closing, cleaning, electricity, water and supplies. by re-negotiating the cleaning contracts and opening only during the summer the total cost to the tax payer has been substantially reduced.
Mayor Norma Symonds from said: “I’m really pleased we have managed to work out a way of keeping the toilet open for the next two summers. The Causeway is very popular with all sorts of residents, particularly kids enjoying the paddling in the pool. It’s a good example of what local councils can do if they work together. Between us we have reduced the total costs to the taxpayer while maintaining the essential facility when it is most needed.”
Councillor Terence Milner, East Herts Council Executive member for environment and conservation, said: “The arrangement we have come to with the Town Council is a great solution. It would be expensive and unnecessary to open it all year round given the success of our Community Toilet Scheme, but by working together and addressing the issue sensibly and collaboratively we have found an excellent way of addressing a particular local need.”
The Toilets will re-open on 1st July and will remain open until 31st October. In 2011 the toilets will be open from 1st May-31st October.
